Kebab Lamps

Designers Clare Page and Harry Richardson, designed the Kebab Lamps for Committee which won them the Elle Decoration Award in 2004. The lamp is quirky, eccentric and has been made by things the designers found in junk shops and markets. If the lamp is not eccentric enough for your taste then wait till you hear the names 'Over the hills and far away' 'Turtle soup' ' Independent woman'. Fantastic!

Google Art Project

Google Art Project is my latest obsession. For all those who have seen it, I am sure must love hopping from the Art Gallery of South Australia to the Art Institute of Chicago and from the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Netherlands to Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and for those who have’nt just click here - Google Art Project and enter the best virtual museum made till date.

The platform now features more than 32,000 artworks from 46 museums in 18 languages. The best feature I think is the 'museum view' where one can walk through the virtual doors admiring works of art. The zoom is beyond imagination, one can zoom into a painting to see the little cracks and paint strokes. Google has taken the next step in building what our education system will look like in 10 years.

Look like an expert ;)

The Genius of Michael Hansmeyer

One of the most compelling and extraordinary piece of information that I spotted at the Heimtextil this time was the emphasis on the word Historian and the work of Michael Hansmeyer. He takes a doric column and generates a new column with algorithms and subdivision processes.

The first 2.7-meter prototype is constructed as a layered model of 1mm cardboard sheet. Further columns of milled 1mm ABS plastic layers were exhibited at the 2011 Gwangju Design Biennale.

The calculation of the cutting path for each sheet takes place in several steps. First, the six million faces of the 3D model are intersected with a plane representing the sheet. This step generates individual line segments that are tested for self-intersection and subsequently combined to form polygons. Next, a polygon-in-polygon test deletes interior polygons. A series of filters then ensures that convex polygons with peninsulas maintain a mininimum isthmus width. In a final step, an interior offset is calculated with the aim of hollowing out the slice to reduce weight.
While the mean diameter of the column is 50cm, the circumference as measured by the cutting path can reach up to 8 meters due to jaggedness and frequent reversals of curvature. The initial prototype uses 1mm grey board. Tests using ABS, wood, as well as metal are under way.

The Quaint little shop by the corner - appearing again

Whenever I travel to Austria, I cross this beautiful quaint little shop by the corner called Makka; which I have always found closed because I arrive too late in the evening. Then, I promise myself everytime that I would catch it open and arrive before 17.00, hmm..did I mention I'm not very good with promises.
So I don't know much about the shop but I could'nt help sharing what I peeped n saw this time.

For sometime now I have missed these quaint little shops with a soul and now it seems they are reappearing everywhere. Move over supermarkets, here comes my favorite shop by the corner

What a beautiful handcrafted 'closed' sign

Quirky envelope Ipad cover.

My favorite piece of furniture in this shop is this chair.

Bokja Design Story

Bokja Design, a company owned by Beirut based designers Hoda Baroudia and Maria Hibri are truly epitome of 'if you have it, you can make it'.
With non design backgrounds they made their presence first felt at the Milan Furniture Fair back in 2010 where they covered a volkswagen beetle with vintage fabrics and today they have customers from Hillary Clinton to Saudi Princesses. Established in 2000, their furniture is a beautiful patchwork of bedouin fabrics, ikats, embroidered tapestries and rich brocades, all patched to make that one handcrafted piece of furniture nostalgic yet contemporary

Easy Color Combination Guide

As a designer colors/color combination is one of the key factors in making a good design.

Yesterday I stumbled upon this website called What it does it not only helps you create a color palette but also helps you see what a complement or triad or analogic colorway will look like.
This is a superb site not only for professionals but for anyone looking for a good scheme to decorate their home/office or a room and want to know what colors would work together. The only minus is that they do not have pantone color codes but RGB values. Apparently Pantone asked them to remove their color code-what a shame :(
Nevertheless it does'nt take away from what the site has to offer - Great Colors Combinations!

Designer 2013 Calendar - Happy New Year

Maria Jose Baustia, a fab designer from Italy, came up with this exciting idea of making a downloadable calendar for 2013, the idea inspired by Jacqueline Auvigne.
We are 12 designers who have made 1 month of the year, color palette is from Pantone Spring 2013, but its amazing to see how we have used colors in our own unique way.
You can read more about this project and can instantly download the calendar for January 2013 here - MuyMajo

Just a heads up for the coming months- Next month is talented Tiffany Designs and the month of March is where you will see my, Simi Design's-spring floral calender

Happy and a very prosperous New Year!
